Need a quick and easy dessert to serve an unexpected guest at the last possible moment or as a snack before bedtime? You’ll be surprised how this simple recipe can be so elegant. This one should tickle your taste-buds.

Sautéed Apples

(serves 2)

1 Apple (Sweet or Tart – I always have Fuji apples and Granny Smiths on hand)

Lemon Zest (optional)

2 Tbs Butter

1/4 cup Pecans, Almonds, or Walnuts (chopped)

2 Tbs Brown Sugar

Pinch Cinnamon

Pinch Nutmeg

Salt

Whipped Cream

Preparation

Core and slice the apple into bite-sized pieces. If you are using a sweet apple, you may want to add the zest of one lemon to add some zing. Chop the nuts.

Cooking

Place a small skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Cook the butter until the foaming subsides and it just starts to turn golden. Add the nuts and stir to coat. Lightly salt the nuts. When the nuts start to turn fragrant, stir in the apples.

When the apples start to soften, add a sprinkle of cinnamon and a grating of nutmeg and stir. (It doesn’t take much spice to flavor this dish.)

Add the brown sugar and stir until the sugar is melted into butter. Serve immediately with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Comments

You can cook this until the apples start to turn brown and caramelize before adding the sugar, but I prefer my apples to have a little bit of crunch left to them.
